Yuvraj Singh was at peak of his glorious career in 2011. He helped India quell the demons of yesteryear by lifting the ICC World Cup. His performance in the series was exceptional. Yuvi, as he is popularly called, was even declared the Player of the Series. A year later in 2012, India was shocked when the aggressive southpaw was diagnosed with cancer.

Initially, it was believed that Yuvraj had lung cancer but it wasn’t the case. DiponEd Biointelligence, known for providing one of the best healthcare services in Bangalore, studied the case. It was found that Yuvraj had a cancerous tumor between his lungs and just above the heart.

At first, Yuvraj was reluctant to undergo treatment. The man was immensely passionate for cricket and he feared it might end his career. The germ cell cancer known as mediastinal seminoma grew over 14 centimeters inside Yuvraj. Fortunately, Yuvraj realized the importance of good health.

The cricketer from Punjab flew to USA for chemotherapy sessions that lasted over a month. Along with nuclear medicine, Yuvi also took help from Ayurveda and went for rehabilitation in the same year.

Many doctors claimed that in Yuvi’s case there was a 95% chance of cure with therapy, with chances of recurrence being nil. It’s highly unlikely Yuvraj was told this when he found out about the disease.

Cancer not only poses physical challenges for people, but also breaks them mentally. The world has always seen a solid and aggressive sportsman in Yuvraj. No opponent could ever break his confidence on the pitch, and neither could cancer. The cricketer was willing to fight back and win the odds of playing for his nation again.

Doctors did whatever they could, and do did Yuvraj. He eventually defeated cancer and made an amazing comeback, something that is not short of any miracle.

In Yuvraj Singh’s own words: ‘It is the passion to come back. If you have the passion, you can come back. This is the reason I am back. Hopefully, I can play a few more years for the country.’
